In a significant move to consolidate its authority, the Kabiru Tanimu Turaki-led National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) held a closed-door meeting with former President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday evening.

The delegation, which included the entire NWC and several state chairmen, arrived at Jonathan’s Maitama office in Abuja around 5:45 p.m., signaling a high-stakes effort to seek counsel from the party elder.

While the specifics remain under wraps, party insiders confirmed the discussion centered on resolving the persistent leadership crisis rocking the PDP, strategizing to reposition the party for the 2027 general election, and addressing other key national issues.

The meeting comes at a critical time for the PDP, which has been fractured into competing factions following a contentious national convention in Ibadan in November 2025, where Turaki’s NWC was elected.

This leadership claim, however, has not been formally recognized by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which is awaiting a Court of Appeal judgment on the matter.

The crisis has created a parallel leadership structure, with a rival faction backed by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike also vying for control, leading to clashes at the party’s national secretariat.

By meeting with Jonathan, who is widely seen as a conciliatory figure, the Turaki-led NWC is attempting to bolster its legitimacy and build broader consensus within the deeply divided party.

The move follows recent efforts by Turaki to shore up his support, including securing a pledge of loyalty from 27 state party chairmen.
