The political tension in Rivers State has ramped up as the state’s House of Assembly initiated impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Oduh, on Thursday.
During a plenary session presided over by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, lawmakers formally accused the governor and his deputy of gross misconduct.
The notice of allegations, signed by 26 members of the assembly, will be served to the governor, who will then have seven days to respond.
This move represents a significant escalation in the protracted political conflict between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, who is the current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and maintains the loyalty of most of the state’s lawmakers.
