The Labour Party (LP) has affirmed Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, as its national leader and extended goodwill to its 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, following his decision to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The party’s National Secretary, Darlington Nwokocha, disclosed this in a communiqué issued after a meeting of the National Working Committee (NWC) held on Wednesday to review issues affecting the party’s stability, growth and strategic direction.
According to the communiqué, the NWC unanimously recognised Governor Otti as the national leader of the Labour Party. The party also wished Obi well in his future political pursuits and in his new political platform.

The NWC further recognised former Minister of Finance, Nenadi Usman, as the national chairman of the party. It reaffirmed the Supreme Court judgment of April 4, 2025, which ruled that the tenure of Julius Abure as LP national chairman had expired.
The party called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to accord Usman and Nwokocha all rights and privileges in line with the Supreme Court ruling earlier referenced by the electoral body.
In addition, the NWC announced that all congresses and the party’s national convention would be conducted in strict compliance with the provisions of the Labour Party constitution, urging members at all levels to actively participate in the process.
The Labour Party thanked its members and Nigerians for their continued interest and confidence, while reaffirming that the party remains united and committed to building a Nigeria based on equal opportunity, social justice and good governance.
The LP emerged third in the 2023 presidential election, with Peter Obi as its candidate.
