The Lagos State government has ordered a formal investigation into the death of Nkanu Nnamdi, the 21-month-old son of author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, following allegations of “criminal negligence” against Euracare Hospital.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has directed the state’s Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA) to conduct a “thorough, independent, and transparent investigation” into the incident.
Adichie claims her son, who was unwell but stable, died due to a series of critical failures during routine medical procedures, including an overdose of sedative and a lack of monitoring by the attending anaesthesiologist.
While Euracare Hospital has expressed sympathy and launched its own internal probe, it stated that the child arrived “critically ill” and that all care provided was in line with international standards.
HEFAMAA officials have already visited the hospital, and the government has assured the public that any individual or institution found culpable will face legal consequences, urging calm while the investigation proceeds.
