Veteran Ugandan opposition figure Kizza Besigye’s health has reached a “critical and deteriorating state” after being taken to a medical facility in Kampala, his party, the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF), says.
The 69-year-old politician, who has been in detention since November 2024, was driven to a private medical facility under heavy security, with reports of acute stomach pain, high temperature, and severe dehydration.
Prison authorities deny his health is dire, claiming it’s a “general check-up”, but the PFF accuses them of denying him proper medical care and violating his basic rights.
Besigye, a former personal doctor to President Yoweri Museveni, faces treason charges and has been denied bail four times.
