Nigeria’s National Power Grid has collapsed once more, leaving millions of households and businesses without electricity. The grid’s power generation plummeted from over 4,500 megawatts to a mere 24 megawatts, with all 23 connected power plants losing output.

This is the first grid collapse in 2026, following a similar incident on December 29, 2025.

The cause of the collapse is yet to be determined, and officials from the Transmission Company of Nigeria have not issued a statement.

Stakeholders have long called for robust contingency measures to prevent such failures, citing technical faults, inadequate maintenance, and generation capacity fluctuations as contributing factors.

This latest collapse raises concerns about Nigeria’s electricity infrastructure and its ability to meet growing demand for reliable power.
