Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has alleged that a “killer squad” was sent to attack him at Witima ACK Church in Othaya, Nyeri County, during a Sunday service.
The incident involved police officers firing live ammunition and lobbing teargas canisters, forcing worshippers to flee.
Gachagua claimed the attack was orchestrated by President William Ruto, citing a group of 15 rogue police officers involved.
The officers allegedly arrived in a police vehicle and an unmarked car, and some were dressed in jungle fatigues with covered faces. The attack left several vehicles damaged, including Gachagua’s, and some worshippers suffered teargas inhalation.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen condemned the violence, calling it “unacceptable” and promising investigations. Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja directed the Internal Affairs Unit to probe the incident.
The confrontation disrupted traffic and resulted in a minibus being vandalized. Gachagua’s supporters claim he was targeted for assassination, while the police say they’re investigating the matter.
