The Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC) has taken a major step in advancing its global sports agenda by signing a strategic partnership with British Cycling.
The move follows a similar agreement between the National Sports Commission and the British Cycling Association, enabling Nigerian cyclists to train in Manchester ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Scotland.
A delegation led by Amy Gardner, Director of Sport and Participation at British Cycling, visited the LSSC for high-level discussions focused on knowledge exchange, skills transfer, and technical capacity building to strengthen cycling development in Lagos State.

Speaking at the meeting, LSSC Director General Lekan Fatodu described the partnership as a deliberate, results-oriented initiative within the state’s broader sports strategy.
“Sport has become a powerful tool for diplomacy and development. Our collaboration with British Cycling is about strengthening technical capacity, deepening institutional competence, and adapting global best practices to deliver measurable value for athletes, coaches, administrators, and cyclists in Lagos,” Fatodu said.
He also credited the enabling environment created by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, noting that strong policy direction and institutional support have positioned Lagos to engage credibly with international partners while pursuing excellence across the sports value chain.

In her remarks, Gardner praised Lagos’ ambition and clarity of purpose.
“We are impressed by the Lagos State Sports Commission’s openness to collaboration. There is clear potential for knowledge sharing and skills transfer that can support participation, develop people, and contribute to the long-term growth of cycling,” she said.
Both parties agreed to formalize the partnership through a structured framework that will include exchange programs, technical workshops, and collaborative initiatives.
The agreement highlights Lagos’ growing reputation as a progressive force in African sports and represents a strategic step toward achieving international standards in cycling, while reinforcing the state’s commitment to youth empowerment, international cooperation, and national pride.
