Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi joined the “Occupy National Assembly” protest in Abuja, demanding real-time electronic transmission of election results.
The protest follows the Senate’s passage of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill, which removed the phrase “real-time” transmission of results.
Obi emphasized the need to prevent glitches like those experienced in 2023 and make electronic transmission mandatory.
The protesters, including civil society groups and opposition members, insist on explicit inclusion of “real-time electronic transmission” in the legislation.
Security was tight, with police, army, and NSCDC personnel deployed around the National Assembly. The protesters, however, plan to demonstrate only at the entrance.
