Uganda’s Information Minister Chris Baryomunsi has condemned a military raid on opposition leader Bobi Wine’s home, stating that Wine had committed no crime and was free to return.

The raid, which occurred on January 24, involved soldiers allegedly assaulting Wine’s wife.

Baryomunsi said the authorities would investigate the incident, adding that the government does not condone “acts of indiscipline” by security forces.

The military chief, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, had previously denied soldiers assaulted Wine’s wife, but later stated they had “captured and then released” her.

Wine, who rejected the January 15 presidential election results, alleging fraud, has been in hiding. Kainerugaba has stated the military is looking for Wine, but hasn’t specified why.

Rights groups accuse the government of using the military to suppress dissent.
