The University of Cambridge has officially transferred ownership of 116 artefacts, known as the Benin Bronzes, to Nigeria. The artefacts were taken by British armed forces during the occupation of Benin City in 1897.

The return follows a formal request by Nigeria’s National Commission for Museums and Monuments and approval from the UK Charity Commission.

The artefacts, valued for their spiritual and historical significance, will be housed in museums in Lagos and Benin City.

Some items will remain on loan at the University of Cambridge’s Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology for display and research.

The return marks a significant step in restoring pride and dignity to the people of Nigeria, who have long sought the return of their cultural heritage.

The move is part of a growing trend of institutions repatriating looted artefacts to their countries of origin.
