Nigeria has secured a permanent seat on the board of the African Central Bank, a significant milestone announced by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, at the 39th African Union Summit.

The move, initially resisted by some member states, marks a major diplomatic breakthrough for Nigeria and the West African region.

Tuggar highlighted Nigeria’s hosting of the African Monetary Institute and the African Central Bank as key achievements.

The country also voiced reservations over Sudan’s potential readmission to the continental body, citing unconstitutional changes in government.

Other West African countries, including Côte d’Ivoire, Sierra Leone, and the Republic of Benin, were elected or re-elected to the Peace and Security Council.

The summit’s theme, “Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems,” aligns with Nigeria’s strategic interests, given its population and water resources.
