The European Union has approved a proposal by FIFA to expand the 2029 FIFA Club World Cup to 48 teams, marking a major change in the tournament’s structure, BSNSports.com.ng reports.

Under the new format, Europe will receive 16 slots, ensuring continued strong representation of the continent’s elite clubs in the global competition.

The expansion is expected to boost the tournament’s competitiveness and commercial appeal, with more top clubs from around the world participating. Africa is set to benefit as well, with six to seven clubs likely to qualify — a significant increase from previous editions, offering greater exposure and revenue opportunities for the continent’s leading teams.

The move aligns with FIFA’s strategy to globalise club football and provide more competitive opportunities to clubs outside Europe and South America.

Details regarding qualification criteria, host arrangements, and scheduling for the 2029 edition are expected to be released in due course.

The decision has sparked discussions among football stakeholders. Supporters praise the increased inclusivity, while critics warn that fixture congestion could become a concern given an already crowded football calendar.
