Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman continued his impressive start at Atlético Madrid, scoring a vital goal as the Spanish side defeated RCD Espanyol 4-2 at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano on Saturday.

The win ended Atlético’s three-game winless streak in LaLiga and extended their lead over fifth-placed Real Betis to six points.
Espanyol shocked the hosts early, taking the lead when Tyrhys Dolan’s cross found Jofre Carreras, who finished neatly at the near post. Atlético responded steadily, with chances for Antoine Griezmann and Matteo Ruggeri, before Marcos Llorente’s build-up play set up Alexander Sørloth for the equaliser.

After halftime, Atlético’s dominance paid off. Álex Baena assisted Giuliani Simeone for the go-ahead goal, and Lookman extended the lead with a superb diving header just before the hour mark. The Nigerian striker’s finish marked his fourth goal in six appearances across all competitions this season.
Lookman was later substituted for Julián Álvarez, but Atlético maintained control. Sørloth added a late header to seal the victory, while Espanyol scored a consolation through Edu Expósito. The result strengthens Atlético’s push for a top-four finish and a return to the Champions League next season.

Since joining Atlético, Lookman has impressed in LaLiga, the UEFA Champions League, and Copa del Rey, drawing comparisons to former club star Luis Suárez. His continued scoring form also boosts optimism for the Nigerian national team ahead of future competitions.
