Former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has called on Nigerians to actively participate in the upcoming 2027 general elections, describing it as a contest between citizens and poor leadership.

Obi made the remarks on Saturday in Anambra State, where he officially joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC). He urged Nigerians to register online with the party to strengthen its national reach.

“With the agreement of all national leaders here today, I urge everyone to register and obtain your card. We want to register as many Nigerians as possible. The 2027 election will be Nigerians against bad leadership. It will be a fight for justice,” Obi said.

The presidential hopeful also stressed the South-East’s right to the presidency, highlighting the zone’s contributions to national development. “No zone can claim to be more Nigerian than the South-East. We live, work, and build across the country. We want a new Nigeria — where a child of nobody can succeed without knowing anybody,” he added.

Obi also linked poverty reduction to improved national security. “We must lift Nigerians out of poverty because insecurity decreases as people are pulled out of poverty. Reducing poverty will reduce criminality,” he said.

Senator Victor Umeh (Anambra Central) and former presidential aide Ben Obi also registered with the ADC during the event. Party leaders launched a statewide registration drive in Awka, urging members to mobilise new recruits at the ward level.

Obi completed his registration at Agulu Ward 2, Anaocha LGA, Umeh at Aguluzigbo Ward 1, and Ben Obi at Agulu Awka, Awka South LGA, marking a significant step in the ADC’s preparation for the 2027 elections.
