Senator Ipalibo Banigo, representing Rivers West Senatorial District, has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The announcement was made by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during Tuesday’s plenary session.
Banigo cited internal divisions, leadership disputes, and ongoing litigations within the PDP as reasons for her decision.
In her letter, Banigo stated that she consulted with constituents, political associates, and stakeholders before making the move.
Her defection increases the number of APC senators to 80, making her one of two female lawmakers in the APC caucus.
Banigo expressed support for President Bola Tinubu’s administration and Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s efforts to advance development in Rivers State.
The senator’s decision follows recent defections, including Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal’s switch to the APC.
