Chad has begun relocating approximately 2,300 refugees, mostly women and children, from its border with Sudan to safer areas within the country.

This move comes as the Chadian army prepares to deploy to the region in response to cross-border attacks.

The relocation effort started on Saturday in Ennedi Est province and will expand to other border towns used as transit sites for refugees.

The decision follows a drone attack from Sudan that killed 17 people in Chad, including mourners at a funeral service.

President Mahamat Idriss Deby ordered the army to prepare for retaliation, and Chad has strengthened its security presence at the border, potentially carrying out operations on Sudanese territory.

The conflict in Sudan between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces has caused casualties and property damage in Chad.

Refugees continue to arrive due to intense fighting in Sudan, with over 1.2 million Sudanese seeking shelter in eastern Chad.
