The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has announced a total lockdown across the South-East from 6am to 6pm on May 30, 2026, to mark “Biafran Heroes and Heroines Remembrance Day.”
The directive was contained in a statement by the group’s Directorate of State (DOS) and signed by its spokesperson, Mr C. Okadigbo.
IPOB said the day is set aside to honour those who died in the struggle for Biafra’s self-determination during Nigeria’s civil war from 1967 to 1970, and in subsequent years up to 2026.
“On May 30th, we pause to remember and honour the men, women, and children who lost their lives fighting for Biafra’s freedom. Their sacrifice remains a defining part of our history and identity,” the statement read.
The group urged residents to observe the day with reflection, prayer, and symbolic remembrance activities such as lighting candles, observing a moment of silence, or gathering with family to share memories.
Describing May 30 as a solemn occasion, IPOB said the sacrifices of its “fallen heroes and heroines” must not be forgotten and should serve as a reminder of the ideals of freedom, dignity, and justice.
During the 12-hour lockdown, IPOB said there will be no movement except for emergency services. All markets, offices, and schools are to remain closed, and market leaders, banks, transport companies, and other organisations have been advised to inform members to stay indoors to avoid confrontations with security operatives.
The DOS said it has formally notified South-East governors and plans to inform other stakeholders by next week.
“We remember them! We honour them! We must not forget their sacrifice,” the statement concluded.
