African football attention turns to Algiers on Saturday as Algeria’s USM Alger host Egypt’s Zamalek SC in the first leg of the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup final at the 5 July Olympic Stadium.

Kick-off is scheduled for 19:00 GMT in what is expected to be a tightly contested North African clash between two of the continent’s most successful clubs.

USM Alger will be banking on home advantage and strong fan support to secure a positive result before the return leg in Cairo next week, while Zamalek aim to leave Algeria with a strong footing in their bid for another continental title.

The fixture carries added significance, with the winner set to claim a major African trophy and a reported $4 million prize.

USM Alger supporters are expected to create a vibrant atmosphere, with a packed stadium anticipated for the high-stakes encounter. The Algerian side will look to channel that energy into a strong performance on home soil.

Zamalek, meanwhile, arrive with considerable continental experience and will be hoping to manage the pressure of playing away in a hostile environment while keeping the tie balanced ahead of the second leg.

USM Alger coach Lamine N’Diaye has urged his team to stay focused and make the most of the first leg, stressing the importance of discipline and collective effort.

Zamalek coach Moatamed Gamal acknowledged the difficulty of the challenge but expressed confidence in his team’s ability to handle big-match pressure, noting that the final will ultimately be decided over two legs.

With both sides boasting rich histories in African football, the final is widely expected to be a tactical and closely fought contest, setting the stage for a decisive return leg in Cairo.
