Uganda has granted an operating license to Elon Musk’s satellite internet company Starlink, President Yoweri Museveni announced on Friday.
Museveni said he presided over the signing of an agreement between the Uganda Communications Commission and Starlink, marking a key step toward the company launching services in the country.
“I am pleased that Starlink has agreed to comply with Uganda’s laws and regulatory requirements as it prepares to begin service delivery in the country,” he posted on X.
Starlink, a unit of SpaceX, is expanding rapidly across Africa and already operates in more than a dozen countries, including Somalia.
The move comes as Ugandan consumers continue to complain about high costs and unreliable internet service, which many blame on limited competition. The market is currently dominated by MTN Uganda and Airtel Uganda.
