The military has commenced efforts to secure the release of former Director of Defence Information, Major General Rabe Abubakar (retd.), and his wife following their abduction by gunmen in Katsina State.

A senior military source confirmed the development on Saturday, assuring that security agencies were working to rescue the retired officer and his spouse.

“We have received the sad news of his abduction and that of his wife, and we will act accordingly to ensure he and his wife are rescued,” the source said.

According to information shared on a military veterans’ platform, the former defence spokesman and his wife were kidnapped while travelling to Katsina State.

The message stated that the incident occurred along the Matazu Local Government Area of the state.

“Maj. Gen. Rabe Abubakar, former Director of Defence Information, was kidnapped together with his wife on his way to Katsina today. He was kidnapped along Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State,” the message read.

It further disclosed that the retired general’s driver escaped from the scene with a gunshot injury.

“His driver escaped with a gunshot injury. The senior officer’s Peugeot 406, red in colour, is parked at Matazu Division of the Nigeria Police Force. Please pass to authorities as appropriate,” the statement added.

As of the time of filing this report, security agencies had yet to issue an official statement on the abduction.

The incident adds to growing concerns over insecurity and kidnapping activities in parts of the country, particularly in the North-West region, where armed groups have continued to target travellers and communities.
