Joseph Otabor, a History and International Studies student at Lagos State University, has died from injuries he got during an armed robbery near the Iba area of Lagos.
LASU spokesperson Olaniyi Jeariogbe said Otabor and his friends were attacked off campus on Friday night, May 29, 2026. The student was rushed to hospital but passed away on Tuesday.
The university said it was “profoundly saddened” by the loss. According to Jeariogbe, the Acting Dean of Students’ Affairs, Dr Abiodun Fatai-Abatan, alerted the Vice-Chancellor and stayed in touch with medical staff throughout Otabor’s treatment. LASU officials also met with the family, LASUTH staff, and police.
Vice-Chancellor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello sent condolences to Otabor’s family, friends, and classmates. The school said it’s working with security agencies to investigate the attack and bring those responsible to justice.
The incident adds to rising concerns about violent attacks across the South-West. In the same week, gunmen kidnapped the sister and twin nephews of ex-minister Adebayo Adelabu in Ibadan, shot the Osun Accord Party chairman in Osogbo, and robbed the NIS passport office in Ogbomoso.
