The Take-It-Back Movement told Ekiti State government it has until June 8, 2026 to rescue 16 worshippers abducted from Eda Oniyo. If nothing happens, TIB says it will organize large protests across the state starting Saturday. They added that intimidation from security agencies won’t stop them, as they push their #EndInsecurityNow campaign.
The crisis began April 28 during an evening revival at a Christ Apostolic Church in Eda Oniyo, headquarters of Ilejemeje LGA. Gunmen opened fire, killed Pastor Aregbe, then dragged 16 people into nearby forests. Most of the captives are women, children as young as 2-3 years old, and an 80-year-old woman.
Kidnappers first demanded ₦1 billion ransom, then dropped it to ₦150 million, then ₦50 million. Residents raised ₦10.5 million from their own savings and delivered it across Kwara and Kogi borders. The bandits took the money and food but refused to release anyone. Now they’re demanding another ₦50 million.
The hostages have spent almost 40 days in the bush without shelter, hygiene, or medical care. Last week, angry residents and youths marched in Eda Oniyo with placards begging President Tinubu and Governor Oyebanji to intervene.
“We gave them millions, food, even fuel. The government has left us to perish,” one resident said.
The House of Representatives has asked the military and police to launch a rescue. Ekiti government also sent a security delegation with the 148 Battalion. Locals say there’s been no real result yet.
