Morocco were held to a 1-1 draw by Norway in an international friendly in New York on Sunday as the Atlas Lions continued preparations for their FIFA World Cup campaign.

The North Africans made a bright start at Sports Illustrated Stadium, taking the lead through Brahim Diaz, who fired a powerful right-footed effort into the bottom corner from inside the penalty area.

Morocco looked on course for victory for much of the contest, but Norway captain Martin Odegaard restored parity in the 75th minute. The Arsenal midfielder calmly swept home after being set up by Fulham winger Oscar Bobb.

While the result provided another valuable test ahead of the tournament, Morocco will be concerned about the fitness of Noussair Mazraoui and Abde Ezzalzouli. The Manchester United defender and Real Betis winger were both forced off with injuries, raising doubts about their availability for the opening stages of the World Cup.

Walid Regragui’s side will now shift their focus to their tournament opener against Brazil on June 13 before taking on Scotland six days later in Group C.

Despite failing to secure victory against Norway, Morocco will take encouragement from another competitive display as they continue fine-tuning preparations for the global showpiece.
