Ronwen Williams, captain of South Africa’s national team Bafana Bafana, has dismissed viral claims suggesting he criticised other African nations for allegedly failing to support South Africa during their 2026 FIFA World Cup opener.

Williams said he has been unfairly targeted online over statements he insists were misrepresented following South Africa’s 2–0 defeat to Mexico in their opening match.

In a video released by the South African Broadcasting Corporation, the goalkeeper clarified that he never accused African countries of backing Mexico, stressing that his earlier comments had been distorted.

“I’ve been a target over the last few days about things that I haven’t said. I didn’t speak anything about Africa and people supporting Mexico,” he said, adding that he has always promoted African unity.

Williams noted that players often become entangled in off-field controversies they have no control over, saying such distractions affect athletes who are focused on performance.

He added that footballers “are human beings as well” and often face pressure from external narratives that have nothing to do with the sport.

Despite the backlash, the South African captain said football remains a unifying force capable of bringing people together across national and cultural divides.

“That’s the wonderful thing about sports. It can unite, it can make or break you, and it can bring people together,” he said, pointing to the diversity of fans attending matches in the United States.

Williams also urged fans to focus on on-field action rather than political or social disputes surrounding teams and players.

“Let’s just enjoy, let’s have a wonderful time, and we leave politics to the politicians,” he added.

Reports had earlier suggested that Williams expressed disappointment over a perceived lack of support from African fans after South Africa’s opening defeat, sparking widespread debate on social media.

The controversy has been linked to broader tensions online, with some users referencing xenophobic concerns in South Africa as justification for supporting opposing teams at the tournament.
