Two suspected spies for the Islamic State West Africa Province, ISWAP, were killed on June 21 while trying to sneak into Nigeria from Cameroon.
Troops from the 152 Battalion under Operation Hadin Kai, working with the Civilian Joint Task Force, ambushed the men at the Banki border area in Borno State.
Security sources told counter-insurgency outlet Zagazola Makama that the men were spotted climbing the border fence from the Cameroonian side. Intelligence indicated they likely entered to scout troop positions and military activity, or to buy supplies for insurgents in the region.
Both suspects died in the gunfight. Afterward, soldiers swept the area and increased surveillance along the border to block further attempts by suspected terrorist collaborators.
The military said the operation fits into OPHK’s wider effort to tighten border security and cut off logistics routes for insurgent groups in the North East. Officials added that troops remain on high alert, treating the area as unpredictable despite an overall calm security situation.
Operation Hadin Kai has continued offensive patrols across the region to stop cross-border movement and weaken the operational capacity of terrorist groups.
