Heavy rains early Monday morning, June 29, 2026, brought parts of Accra to a halt as floodwaters submerged major roads and neighborhoods.

Traffic was worst around the Tetteh Quashie Interchange. Vehicles were stuck under the rail line overpass from the Spintex Road roundabout near Action Chapel, stretching toward the Polo Grounds and Hajj Village.

The National Disaster Management Organisation, NADMO, issued an alert confirming widespread flooding across Accra and Tema. The Ghana National Fire Service has also deployed rescue teams to affected areas in Accra, Tema, and Kasoa.

Communities hit hardest include Abeka, Lapaz, Achimota, Dzorwulu, Tesano, and surrounding areas. In southwest Accra, commuters on the N1 Highway from Kasoa through the Weija Barrier and Mallam faced major delays as water covered sections of the road.

Other areas reporting severe flooding are Tantra, Apenkwa toward Tesano, the Accra–Kasoa stretch, Atomic in Madina, Kaneshie, Darkuman Junction, and portions of the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange, according to residents and road users.

Many low-lying areas and key arterial roads became partially submerged. Some drivers abandoned their vehicles, while others crawled through the water. Homes and shops in flood-prone communities were also inundated, forcing residents to move belongings as water levels rose.

GMet has warned that southern Ghana should expect more thunderstorms as a rainstorm system moves west from Togo and Benin.
