The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in Oyo State has suspended its indefinite strike following a directive from the union’s national leadership.
The decision was announced in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Chairman of the Oyo State NUT, Hassan Fatai, and the union’s Secretary, Olukayode Salami.
According to the statement, the suspension came after the union reviewed the security situation surrounding the abduction of schoolchildren, which had prompted the industrial action.
The union also said it took into consideration appeals from the Oyo State Government and other key stakeholders who called for the resumption of academic activities while efforts to address the security concerns continue.
The strike had been declared in response to the abduction of schoolchildren, with teachers demanding improved security measures to protect pupils, students, and education workers across the state.
With the suspension now in effect, teachers are expected to return to classrooms as discussions between the union and relevant authorities continue over measures to strengthen safety in schools.
