The Allied People’s Movement has called on the President Bola Tinubu-led government to immediately publish a detailed and independently verifiable report on all funds saved from fuel subsidy removal since May 2023.
In a statement on Thursday signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Abubakar Yusuf, the party said the demand was prompted by what it described as worsening economic hardship, high cost of living, decaying public facilities, and a growing infrastructure deficit nationwide.
APM estimated the total subsidy proceeds at over ₦20 trillion. The party said Nigerians have not seen corresponding improvements despite the amount.
The group recalled Tinubu’s May 29, 2023 announcement that “subsidy is gone.” Since then, it said, petrol prices rose from below ₦200 per litre to over ₦1,500 per litre. That spike, according to APM, triggered increases in transport fares, food prices, school fees, medical bills, rent, electricity tariffs, and the cost of everyday goods.
“The government must rise above political rhetoric and tell Nigerians exactly how much has been saved, how it has been spent, who the beneficiaries are, and what has been achieved,” the statement read.
APM also alleged widespread corruption and diversion of funds. It accused officials of “bandying figures and fictitious achievements” while ordinary citizens bear the brunt.
“Hunger has become a national emergency,” the party said. “Millions of families cannot afford daily meals. Small businesses are collapsing under rising costs. The purchasing power of workers has been destroyed, and poverty and unemployment are climbing at alarming rates.”
On infrastructure, APM cited an estimated $2.3 trillion deficit. It noted that experts project Nigeria will need about $100 billion annually for the next 30 years to close the gap.
The party faulted the administration for making “vague claims” that subsidy savings are being invested in critical sectors without providing figures, project lists, or evidence of impact.
“The true measure of any economic reform is not the volume of official pronouncements but its tangible effect on the lives of the people,” APM said.
It urged the federal government to urgently release a public report detailing total subsidy savings, all expenditures, beneficiaries of interventions, and measurable outcomes.
