Gunmen stormed Eggi Oyo-Ipo Community in Irepodun Local Government Area of Kwara State late Wednesday night and abducted an Islamic cleric, sources familiar with the incident said.
The heavily armed assailants invaded the community and whisked the cleric away to an unknown location alongside a businessman. According to residents, the attackers have since made contact with members of the community to demand ransom.
A source told SaharaReporters that the kidnappers are asking for N15 million for the release of the Islamic cleric. Another N50 million was demanded for the businessman who was abducted with him, bringing the total demand to N65 million.
“The man picked runs a business centre at Buari but lives in Eggi Oyo-Ipo. He was traced to Eggi Oyo-Ipo last night and was abducted alongside one Mallam,” the source said.
The incident has been reported to the Divisional Police Officer in Ajasse-Ipo for immediate action.
The abduction is the latest in a series of attacks affecting communities in Kwara South. Residents say the area has seen a rise in armed invasions, with many rural dwellers fleeing their homes over persistent security threats.
Security operatives are yet to make a public statement on efforts to rescue the victims.
