Mali’s former Prime Minister Moussa Mara is free.
Mara announced his release over the weekend in a video posted to Facebook.
He was sentenced in October 2025 to two years for a social media post that criticized the military government’s limits on democracy. The sentence included one year in prison and one year on probation.
Mara had been in detention since August 2024. Authorities charged him with undermining the credibility of the state and spreading false information after a July 2025 post in which he voiced support for government critics who were jailed. He was summoned several times in connection with that post.
He is one of the few prominent public figures in Mali who has openly criticized the military government led by Assimi Goita.
