Cape Town International Airport’s main runway was closed Tuesday afternoon after a Kenya Airways plane suffered a tyre failure while landing.
Airports Company South Africa said the incident happened at about 15:25 local time, 13:25 GMT. All passengers were safely evacuated from the aircraft.
By 18:00 local time the plane was still stuck on the runway, a spokesperson confirmed.
Because of the closure, all inbound flights were diverted to other airports. Domestic departures continued to run, but international departures were halted.
Cape Town is South Africa’s second-busiest airport and a major hub for tourists visiting the coastal city.
