Former Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has pledged to restore the petrol subsidy if he wins the 2027 presidential election.
Atiku made the promise during an interview on Wednesday, questioning how the funds saved from the removal of the subsidy have been used.
He said the savings were expected to support poverty reduction, education and other areas of national development, but argued that Nigerians had not seen sufficient benefits from the policy.
According to Atiku, he did not initially oppose the removal of the subsidy but was concerned about the management of the funds generated from the decision.
He said his administration would restore the subsidy if elected and ensure that anyone found to have misappropriated the funds was made to refund them.
Atiku, however, said he could reconsider the subsidy policy if the money saved was transparently used to address major challenges such as insecurity, education, poverty and youth unemployment.
The former vice president is among the politicians preparing for the 2027 presidential election.
