The Federal Government has announced Tuesday, August 25, 2026 as a public holiday to mark Eid-ul-Mawlid, the celebration of the birth of Prophet Muhammad.
Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the declaration on Friday. The announcement was contained in a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dr. Magdalene Ajani.
Tunji-Ojo congratulated Muslims in Nigeria and in the diaspora. He urged all Nigerians to use the period to reflect on values linked to the Prophet’s life.
“Every Eid-ul-Mawlid reminds us to pause and learn from a life built on compassion, humility and service to others,” he said. “These are the qualities our country needs right now. I encourage every Nigerian, not only our Muslim brothers and sisters, to reflect on them.”
The minister also asked citizens to pray for peace and national unity during the celebration. He stressed that unity remains a shared responsibility.
Tunji-Ojo further advised Nigerians to mark the day with restraint and mutual respect, and wished the Muslim community a peaceful holiday.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting lives and property, and to sustaining peace across the country.
