Renewed infighting between Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province has left more than 23 terrorists dead in Sambisa Forest, Borno State.
Security sources said the latest clash broke out around the Chingolo area of Bama Local Government, after ISWAP fighters moved into territory held by Boko Haram. Boko Haram elements responded with an attack, sparking two days of sustained gun battles.
A video obtained by Zagazola Makama shows heavy exchanges of fire as both sides tried to hold ground and stop the other from expanding control inside the forest.
According to preliminary intelligence, at least 23 fighters from both factions have been killed since the hostilities started about 48 hours ago. Independent verification of the breakdown per group was not immediately available.
The clash reflects the long-running rivalry between the two groups over territory, supply routes, resources and recruitment in Sambisa and surrounding communities.
Officials say the fighting has further disrupted the groups’ operations in an area that has served for years as a key insurgent base in the North-East.
Security forces said they are tracking developments closely and using intelligence on the movements of both factions. The military added that it is continuing strikes on terrorist hideouts, logistics hubs and concentrations as part of ongoing counter-terrorism operations.
Authorities have also called on residents near Sambisa Forest to stay alert and report any suspicious movements to security agencies.
Zagazola Makama understands the situation remains volatile, with both Boko Haram and ISWAP said to be repositioning fighters. More clashes are possible in the coming days.
