Authorities in Kenya exhumed seven additional bodies from the Shakahola Forest on Monday. This latest discovery brings the total number of recovered bodies to 436, as the grim search for victims of a deadly cult persists.

The Shakahola forest has become a notorious site since April 2023, when the first mass graves were uncovered.

These discoveries led to the arrest of Pastor Paul Mackenzie, who stands accused of leading a cult that drove its followers to starve themselves to death under the belief that doing so would allow them to “meet Jesus.”

The painstaking exhumation process has revealed the extent of the tragedy, with each new set of remains uncovering more about the horrors experienced by Mackenzie’s followers. So far, only 34 of the victims have been identified, highlighting the difficulty and scale of the investigation.

Authorities continue to work tirelessly to uncover the full scope of the tragedy, hoping to bring closure to the families of the victims and ensure justice is served.

The Shakahola exhumations have prompted a national reckoning on the influence of extremist cults and the need for increased vigilance and intervention to prevent such atrocities in the future.
