The Super Eagles of Nigeria suffer a 2-1 defeat to Benin Republic in Matchday 4 of the 2026 World Cup Qualifier at the Stade Félix-Houphouët-Boigny in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire.

The defeat is the first time Nigeria will be losing to Benin Republic and also a result that leaves Super Eagles World Cup qualification under New Coach, Finidi George on the line.

Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the next World Cup is in jeopardy, as they have managed only three points from four matches after draws against South Africa, Zimbabwe and Lesotho.

The Super Eagles needed a win in this game after a recent draw with South Africa. The match began promisingly for Nigeria, who had to wait 25 minutes before taking the lead. Raphael Onyedika of Club Brugge gave the Super Eagles an advantage by coolly slotting in a goal just inside the box.

However, the Cheetahs of Benin, coached by former Nigerian Manager, Gernot Rohr equalized in the 37th minute when Jodei Dossou capitalized on a defensive error by the Super Eagles. Benin further compounded Nigeria’s misery just before the halftime whistle, with Steve Mounie scoring to give the Cheetahs the lead.

Monday’s result leaves Nigeria in 5th place in Group C for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. The three-time African champions next match will be against Rwanda on the 17th of March 2025.
