The Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria (MSSN), B-Zone, has expressed profound disappointment and strong condemnation regarding the University of Port Harcourt’s decision to schedule a field trip for the “Geological Mapping Project” course (Course code: GLY 414.2) during the Salah period.

This was made known in a press statement signed by the MSSN B-Zone President, Dr. Kolawole Moshood A.

This decision was made despite the federal government’s declaration of a public holiday, which the MSSN deems insensitive and disrespectful to Muslim students’ religious practices.

The MSSN is troubled that the University would force Muslim students to choose between their religious obligations and a mandatory academic activity.

This decision is viewed as unfair, discriminatory, and a violation of the principles of inclusivity and respect for religious diversity that should define any reputable educational institution.

Section 38 of the Nigerian Constitution guarantees freedom of thought, conscience, and religion, including the right to practice one’s religion.

Additionally, scheduling academic activities on a declared public holiday, such as Eid-l-Kabir, infringes on students’ rights to observe their religious practices without interference.

The Labour Act also mandates the observance of public holidays recognized by the federal government, ensuring that students and workers are not compelled to forgo these observances.

The MSSN urges the University of Port Harcourt management, the Federal Ministry of Education, and all relevant authorities to address this issue immediately.

They call for the department or lecturer responsible for the scheduling to be held accountable to prevent any escalation into religious conflict.

Upholding respect for religious practices and inclusivity is essential to fostering a harmonious academic environment.

The MSSN B-Zone remains committed to advocating for the rights of all students to practice their religion freely and without discrimination.

They call upon the University management to reschedule the field trip to avoid conflict with the Salah period, ensuring that all students are treated with fairness and respect.
