Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, has called on Muslims to contribute to the fight against poverty by making zakat, sadaqat, and waqf donations.

Speaking at the launch of the IBILE Muslims Community Zakat and Sadaqah Foundation at the University of Lagos, Sanwo-Olu emphasised the importance of these charitable practices in Islam.

Represented by Deputy Governor Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, Sanwo-Olu highlighted that zakat, sadaqah, and waqf are critical components of Islamic faith, reflecting values of compassion, solidarity, and social justice.

He compared the obligation of zakat to the requirements of fasting during Ramadan and daily prayers, urging Muslims to fulfill their duty to assist the less fortunate.

“Just like fasting during the month of Ramadan and observing our daily prayers, zakat payment is compulsory for Muslims. It is for us as Muslims not to abdicate our responsibility but understand that we need to share with the poor and needy in our midst from what Allah has blessed us with,” Sanwo-Olu stated.

He added that these principles remind Muslims of their duties to support the less fortunate, promote equity, and foster environments where all individuals can thrive. Sanwo-Olu lauded the establishment of the IBILE Muslims Community Zakat and Sadaqah Foundation as a milestone in collaborative efforts to translate Islamic principles into tangible actions.

“By harnessing the power of zakat, we are ensuring that wealth is redistributed in a manner that alleviates poverty and reduces economic disparity. Through sadaqah, we are encouraging voluntary charity that fosters a spirit of giving and generosity. And with waqf, we are investing in sustainable endowments that will provide long-term benefits to our communities,” he explained.

Sanwo-Olu commended the leaders of the IBILE Muslims Community for their vision and dedication, urging them to maintain transparency and accountability in their operations. He also called on all Muslims to donate generously to the foundation.

Chief Imam of Lagos, Sheikh Oluwatoyin Sulaiman Abou-Noulla, described the foundation as a beacon of hope and a symbol of collective responsibility. He emphasized that zakat and sadaqah promote generosity and social justice, contributing to the development of vital community infrastructure, including education and healthcare facilities.

“By contributing to this cause, you are not only enriching your life in this world but also preparing for the hereafter. You are contributing to the development of essential infrastructure such as improved educational institutions and healthcare facilities, empowering programs, and more,” he said.

Guest speakers Prof. AbdilRasaq Alaro and Sheikh Sulaiman Onikijipa also stressed the importance of zakat, sadaqah, and waqf in eradicating poverty and empowering the needy. They urged Muslims to give generously, highlighting the divine obligation to support those in need.

The event underscored the importance of collective efforts in empowering communities through religious principles, with a call for continued generosity and commitment to social justice.
