A Kano State High Court, under the authority of Justice Amina Aliyu, has issued a permanent injunction barring Aminu Ado-Bayero and four other deposed Emirs from presenting themselves as traditional rulers.

The ruling, delivered on Monday, extends to the former Emirs of Bichi, Rano, Gaya, and Karaye, prohibiting them, their associates, and anyone acting on their behalf from assuming the titles of Emirs of Kano and its associated emirates.

The legal action was initiated by the Kano State Government, seeking to prevent the 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado-Bayero, and the deposed Emirs of Karaye, Bichi, Rano, and Gaya from exercising any authority as traditional leaders.

The government had earlier issued a directive giving the deposed Emirs 48 hours to vacate their respective palaces following their dethronement.

Justice Aliyu clarified during the judgement that the matter of evicting the deposed Emir from his Nasarawa mini palace falls under the jurisdiction of a rent tribunal and was not within the scope of the court’s decision.

In addition to the injunction, Justice Aliyu ordered the former Emirs to promptly surrender all Emirate Traditional Royal Artefacts to the government and the current Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II.

The court further upheld the constitutionality of the State Assembly Emirate Council Repeal Law 2024, enacted under Section 4 of the Constitution, and affirmed the validity of Governor Abba Yusuf’s assent to the law.

The ruling marks a significant legal milestone in the ongoing governance and traditional leadership dynamics in Kano State, emphasising adherence to constitutional processes and legal norms.
