Members of the House of Representatives have agreed to reduce their salaries by 50 percent for six months in a show of solidarity and sacrifice amid the economic hardship and hunger affecting Nigerians.

This decision came after the House adopted an amendment to a motion proposed by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Okezie Kalu. Kalu’s motion urged lawmakers to donate 50% of their N600,000 monthly salaries to support citizens during these challenging times.

Kalu’s amended prayer responded to a motion by Representative Isiaka Ayokunle, who called on those planning nationwide protests to abandon their plans and engage in dialogue with the government instead.

The Deputy Speaker explained that the salary cut is intended to support federal government efforts to address the rising cost of food, thereby helping to ease the financial burden on Nigerians.

With the 30% salary reduction, the 360 lawmakers will be collectively sacrificing N108 million monthly over the next six months.

The motion was adopted and referred to the committees on Humanitarian Affairs, Finance, and Budget for compliance.
