Nigeria’s Super Falcons will begin their campaign in Group C against Brazil in Bordeaux on Thursday Evening.

Brazil, one of the top contenders for a medal in women’s football, faces a determined Super Falcons team aiming for a historic victory. The Nigerians are focused on proving their medal contention by targeting an early goal to disrupt Brazil’s game plan. This strategy is crucial for setting the stage for their upcoming matches against Japan and Spain.

The Super Falcons have previously faced Brazil twice, both ending in defeat. In their first encounter during the USA 1999 FIFA World Cup quarterfinals, the Super Falcons narrowly lost 4-3 due to the golden goal rule after an impressive comeback. Brazil also won 3-1 in the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games group stage.

According to sources, Coach Randy Waldrum plans to deploy an all-attacking formation to secure early goals and unsettle Brazil. The Samba Girls, led by veteran striker, Marta, are confident of a victory to pave their way to the second round.

Securing at least a point in this match for the Super Falcons is crucial before facing the reigning world champions, Spain, and former world champions, Japan. Nigeria’s best Olympic performance was at Athens 2004, where they lost 2-1 to Germany in the quarterfinals. While the Super Falcons missed the last three Olympic editions, Brazil has consistently participated, winning silver in 2004 and 2008.

Brazilian forward, Adriana Leal De Silva emphasized the importance of the match, noting that attention to detail, such as set pieces, will be critical. She stated, “This first game is crucial. We need to have much concentration and focus for this debut and take it step-by-step.”

Brazil has studied footage of Super Falcons goalkeeper Chidozie Nnamaka, preparing their strikers for today’s game. Coming into this fixture, Brazil has won nine of their last 11 matches, while the Super Falcons are undefeated in their last eight competitive matches, despite a recent 0-1 loss to Canada in a warm-up game.

The match will kick off at 6:00 p.m.
