On Sunday, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud met in private with a group from Egypt. On Monday, he left for Asmara, Eritrea, for a two-day state visit.

The facts of the Egyptian delegation’s arrival in Mogadishu, which was sent by President Abdel Fatah Elsisi, were withheld until after their meeting with President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.

In an official statement, the Somalia Presidency, Villa Somalia, announced, “the delegation conveyed an official invitation for President Hassan Sheikh to visit Egypt.”

On Sunday, a significant meeting occurred at Villa Somalia, where the Egyptian delegation reaffirmed President El Sisi’s unwavering support for Somalia’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity.

Following this, President Mohamud embarked on a journey to Asmara, invited by Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki.

These diplomatic events are unfolding amidst rising tensions between Somalia and Ethiopia, sparked by the recent signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Addis Ababa and Hargeisa. Somalia’s federal government dismissed the MOU as “illegitimate” due to its provision granting Ethiopia access to the Red Sea.

In the wake of this disagreement, heightened concerns have arisen, with Somalia military officials advocating for the mobilization of insurgents in Ethiopia and Somaliland.

The shifting diplomatic dynamics in the region highlight the intricate challenges facing the Horn of Africa.
