On Friday, the Supreme Court upheld the re-election of Hope Uzodimma as the governor of Imo State in the November 11, 2023 governorship election.

A five-member panel of the apex court, led by Justice Mohammed Idris, dismissed the appeals filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Samuel Anyanwu, as well as the Labour Party (LP) and its candidate, Athan Achonu, citing a lack of merit.

Justice Idris, who delivered the lead judgment, resolved all issues against the appellants, affirming the earlier decisions of the Court of Appeal and the Imo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal.

The appellants had challenged Uzodimma’s election because of alleged non-compliance with the Electoral Act and accusations of submitting a forged West African Examination Certificate (WAEC).

However, the courts found that the appellants failed to substantiate these claims, leading to the dismissal of their petitions.
