On Saturday, Ahmed Rufai Abubakar, the Director General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), submitted his resignation to President Bola Tinubu.
Ahmed Rufai Abubakar has resigned from his position as the Director General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA). He submitted his resignation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Saturday at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Explaining why he resigned, he said: “There are so many reasons for doing this, some personal, and family but nothing serious actually. The friendship will continue.”.
He explained that he had opportunity to mentor younger officers, “We have a lot of officers who can do this job and do it excellently well,” he added.
Abubakar, a retired career Foreign Service officer, was appointed to the role in 2018 by former President Muhammadu Buhari. Before his appointment as the NIA Director General, he served as the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and International Relations.
With a rich background in diplomacy, Abubakar had extensive experience with the United Nations, where he was involved in peace support operations, mediation processes, preventive diplomacy, and promoting good governance, the rule of law, and human rights.
