The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic death of Christian Obi, the head coach of Heartland FC and Former Nigeria U-20 goalkeeper.

Obi passed away following a fatal accident involving one of the team’s buses as they traveled to Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, for a pre-season tournament.

Heartland FC’s Media Officer, Olatunde Liadi, confirmed the sad news in a statement on Saturday, revealing that the accident occurred on Friday, August 23, 2024. The team had departed from the Dan Anyiam Stadium in Owerri with high spirits, but tragedy struck when one of their vehicles collided with a parked truck while trying to avoid an oncoming vehicle. The impact left Obi unconscious, and despite efforts to save him at a nearby hospital, he succumbed to his injuries.

In a statement, NFF President Ibrahim Gusau expressed the organization’s shock and grief, extending condolences to Obi’s family, friends, and the Heartland FC community. He acknowledged Obi’s significant contributions to Nigerian football, both as a coach and a player.

Heartland FC also paid tribute to their late coach, highlighting his achievements, including leading the team to an unbeaten run in the Nigeria National League (NNL) during the 2022/23 season and securing the NNL Super 8 title. The club requested privacy for Obi’s family during this difficult time and announced that no further statements would be made for now.

Christian Obi was a celebrated figure in Nigerian football history, known for his role in the Nigeria U-20 team that won bronze at the 1985 FIFA World Youth Championship.
