A group of Polish students arrested in Nigeria have been released, the Polish foreign ministry announced on Wednesday.

Earlier this month, the Department of State Services (DSS) detained seven Polish nationals in Kano for allegedly raising Russian flags during anti-government protests. However, a spokesperson for Poland’s foreign ministry denied the accusation, stating that the students were merely in the vicinity of the protest and were not involved in waving the flags.

In a post on social media platform X, the Polish foreign ministry confirmed the release of the students, stating, “The Polish students have been released and are in Kano. Thank you to everyone involved in the release of the Polish citizens!”

The arrests took place amid widespread protests in Nigeria that began on August 1st, 2024, where protesters demonstrated against President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms, which included bad governance, removal of fuel and electricity subsidies, currency devaluation, and inflation reaching three-decade highs.
