Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu announced the commencement of the Red Line Rail project on Sunday through his X (formerly Twitter) account, marking a significant milestone in the effort to create a more efficient and interconnected city.

“This achievement represents a major advancement in reshaping public transportation in Lagos, bringing us closer to a modern, efficient, and interconnected city,” Governor Sanwo-Olu stated.

The Red Line will initially operate four daily trips between Oyingbo and Agbado, a crucial route aimed at alleviating commuting challenges for thousands of residents. This route is expected to substantially reduce traffic congestion and improve the quality of life for Lagosians.

Morning departures from Oyingbo are scheduled to start at 8:30 AM, with the train making stops at key stations, including Yaba, Mushin, Oshodi, Ikeja, and Agege, before arriving in Agbado at 9:37 AM. The governor emphasized that the trains will adhere strictly to their schedules, ensuring order and efficiency in the rail services.

“This initial passenger operation allows us to continually assess the system’s safety, reliability, and efficiency while gathering valuable feedback from passengers. This is a crucial step towards full commercial operations,” Sanwo-Olu explained.

Once fully operational, the Red Line is expected to run 20 trips daily, with the capacity to transport over 500,000 passengers each day. Beyond transportation, the Red Line is envisioned as a vital link that will connect communities and spur economic growth across Lagos.

To join this transformative experience, interested passengers are encouraged to register through the provided link.

“Together, we are creating a Lagos that serves everyone—efficient, connected, and poised for the future,” the governor concluded.

The Red Line project is a key element of Lagos State’s broader strategy to develop a comprehensive and sustainable public transportation network, designed to address the city’s growing population and traffic demands.
