Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has called for calm among residents following the announcement of the results of Saturday’s governorship election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Sunday.

INEC declared Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner of the closely contested election in the state. Okpebholo, 54, secured 291,667 votes, defeating Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who received 247,274 votes, and Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party (LP), who finished third with 22,761 votes.

In a statement reacting to the outcome, Governor Obaseki expressed concern over what he described as a disregard for due process and the rule of law during the election. He urged those dissatisfied with the results to pursue legal avenues to express their grievances.

The statement read: “Over the past few months, various political parties have engaged in rigorous campaigns to present their candidates for the governorship of Edo State. This process culminated in yesterday’s election.

“The beauty of democracy lies in its power to give people the right to choose their leaders. However, when that power is forcibly taken away, it represents not just a tragedy, but a betrayal of democracy.

“Unfortunately, the outcome of the September 21st governorship election has dampened the spirits of many Edo citizens who now feel powerless in the face of the institutions that are meant to protect them. It is understandable that many are feeling upset and aggrieved.

“Despite this frustration, I urge my fellow Edo citizens to remain calm and avoid violence or the destruction of property in response to this provocation. “Peace and justice will always prevail, and this is the message I give to the good people of Edo State who feel wronged at this time.

“It is clear to even the most casual observer the level of impunity and blatant disregard for due process that characterized this election. “In a democracy, there are mechanisms for addressing grievances, and I hope that those affected will seek redress for this obvious breach of law and order.

“With this in mind, I urge all Edo citizens to continue their daily activities peacefully and rest assured that the government remains committed to their safety and wellbeing.”
