NBA Hall of Famer, Dikembe Mutombo has passed away at the age of 58 after battling brain cancer. The eight-time NBA All-Star, who retired in 2009, had an illustrious 18-year career, playing for the Denver Nuggets, Atlanta Hawks, Philadelphia 76ers, New Jersey Nets, New York Knicks, and Houston Rockets. He began treatment for a brain tumor in October 2022.

“Dikembe Mutombo was simply larger than life,” said NBA Commissioner Adam Silver. “On the court, he was one of the greatest shot blockers and defensive players in NBA history. Off the court, he dedicated himself to helping others.”

Standing 7 feet 2 inches tall, the DR Congo-born center was discovered while studying at Georgetown University and was selected fourth overall in the 1991 NBA Draft. Known for his warm personality and trademark finger-wagging celebration, he became a fan favorite. Mutombo reached the NBA Finals twice, first with the 76ers in 2001 and again with the Nets two years later. He led the NBA in blocked shots for five consecutive seasons and holds the record for blocks per game over three consecutive seasons.

After his retirement, both the Hawks and Nuggets retired his number 55 jersey, and he was inducted into the NBA Hall of Fame in 2015. Mutombo was also a global ambassador for the NBA and engaged in extensive humanitarian work in his native Democratic Republic of the Congo and throughout Africa. Silver noted, “He loved what the game of basketball could do to positively impact communities.”

The Houston Rockets, where Mutombo played the final five years of his career, expressed their sorrow, calling him a “true ambassador of our game.” Rockets owner Tilman Fertitta added, “Dikembe was beloved by the entire NBA community, and his humanitarian efforts left a lasting impact.”

Daryl Morey, president of basketball operations for the Philadelphia 76ers, remembered Mutombo fondly. “He was an amazing human being, both on and off the court,” Morey said. “His contributions to Africa and the game will never be forgotten. Rest in peace, Dikembe
